Self-published, printed by Laumé media
‘Dagboek van mijn Vader’ is a touching story about my grandfather, a young watchmaker during the second World War in my hometown Helmond. When my father retired, he finally had time to read my grandfather’s diary that he kept during WWII. The notes and stories in the dairy were insightful, funny and touching. That is why Louis decided to write it up in the book and share the stories with the rest of the Netherlands.
Naturally I wanted to pitch in with this project. I did the DTP work: I designed the front cover and book layout and made the file ready for printing.
Book Cover
The cover displays how you would typically find my grandfather: repairing a watch in his workshop. An actual page from is diary is added on top of the photograph. The entire book was published in black and white to emphasise the zeitgeist.

Fonts and paragraphs
The book uses a classical font-family. The absence of any whitespace around the text reflects my grandfather’s written scriptures in his diary.
Some paragraphs are copied literally from his letters or stories. These are accentuated with the italic font and by centering the text on the page.
