I have always been crazy about Lego, and have always wanted to make my own Lego-style icons. It was fun afternoon playing with digital Lego tiles, with some fun challanges for some icons. I am incredibly happy with the result. What do you thing?

Process

Google handlettering. Tiles seem to be perfect. But which official lego tiles are there? Well, some googling at other projects, I found these.

So, let’s get started!

I’ll show Facebook as example for the process.

Facebook

I started easy, with Facebook. This is pretty straightforward. Just some white tiles on a blue surface. Check it out:

The Facebook logo was an easy start as it required no special tiles.

The 8×8 grid gives quite some design freedom while keeping a minimal look.

3D icons

A little later I found an online 3D tool (based on Blend) including all existing LEGO parts on www.mecabricks.com. So after drawing everythin in 2D by hand, I redesigned the icons in with existing LEGO pieces and a beautifull 3D render.

Stacking plates & tiles

Some icons required stacking of tiles in 3D. For example, the Pinterest logo requires a scewed downward line (the bottom of the P). I stacked a line on a round stud so it can be freely rotated. Also, the email icon looks better when the lid of the enveloppe is on top of the rest.

Result

The result of an afternoon of work is a set of 9 icons. Designing with LEGO is so much fun!
